Goals and Objectives for Hawaiian Unit

     Lesson 01 (You and Me with Hawaiian Ukulele)

Goal #01  Students will be able to listen to and respond to a story

Objective #01  Listen to and respond to the story.  Each child should be able to talk about what it means to pretend.  Children will understand and be able to talk about the words: Differ – When things differ from one another, they are not the same. Stalking—When an animal is stalking another animal, it sneaks up on it to try and catch it.   Mellow—When you are mellow, you feel gentle and relaxed.  Students will be introduced to the Hawaiian ukulele and be able to label this instrument correctly and understand with 100% accuracy that this is a Hawaiian instrument.

     Lesson 02 (Kelly in the Mirror with Hawaiian Ukulele continued)

Goal #02 

Students will listen to the story and then have a chance to rehearse the information which will help them to learn the information in an unforgettable way.

Objective #02

Students will be able to identify and use the following words when prompted orally or visually with 90% accuracy: arch (as in arch your back), back (the part of the body), Thump (as in thump your chest), chest, wave (as in wave your arms), arms, wriggle, hips, bend, knees, clap, hands, kick, legs, stomp, foot (feet), wiggle, toes(s), bend, neck.  Students will talk more about the ukulele with complete understanding that this is a Hawaiian instrument and sing a song accompanied by it with 90% accuracy.

     Lesson 03 (Assessment)

Goal #03  To check for understanding before teaching

Objective #03  The assessment will given to check understanding of the following math concepts:  Left/Right and ordinal numbers from first to tenth.

     Lesson 04 (Math: Hawaiian Maps, Left/Right)

Goal #04  make sure every child is competent in the use of left and right

Objective #04  Identify and use positional words (right and left) with 100% accuracy when asked to identify their hands and feet.  Be able to identify the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Maui, and The Big Island with 50% accuracy when prompted by a picture that shows a map of these islands.

     Lesson 05 (Math: Ordinal Numbers)

Goal #02 Students will have a chance to learn about some roles in the Hawaiian society and become masters of ordinal numbers from first to tenth.

Objective #02   Students will be able to respond to a line of people or objects and state which is first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth with 100 % accuracy when prompted by a cue such as he is first, she is ___, etc.   Students will be able to identify a Hawaiian King, surfer, and hula dancer when asked about someone dressed to represent these roles with 100 % accuracy.

     Lesson 06 (Math: Patterns, Hawaiian Fruit)

Goal #06 Students will enjoy learning about patterns

Objective #06 Students will be able to create an (AB), and (ABC) pattern with motions, sounds, and objects.  They will be able to recognize a papaya and coconut.  They will understand what it means to strum an ukulele.

      Lesson 07 (Language Arts: Two Gingerbread Man stories)

Goal #07 Students will have the chance to hear two different versions of The Gingerbread Man tale and compare and contrast them.

Objective #07  Students will be able to tell how the Gingerbread man and The Musibi man are alike and how they are different with 90% accuracy listing at least 3 important details.    Students will be able to use the words; fancy, delicious, and ono (Hawaiian for delicious), in a sentence when asked with 100 % accuracy.

     Lesson 08 (Language Arts: Two Gingerbread Man stories Part 2)

Goal #08  Students will become more familiar with the story and see that there are other versions.

Objective #08  Students will be able to tell how the Gingerbread man and The Musibi man are alike and how they are different.   Students will be able to use the words; fancy, delicious, and ono (Hawaiian for delicious), in a sentence when asked with 100 % accuracy.

     Lesson 09 (Language Arts: Two Gingerbread Man stories Part 3 and Evaluation)

Goal #09  Students will be able to share more about this story and become masters of much of the material as this is a very important book in children’s’ fiction.

Objective #09  Students will be able to summarize the story including the beginning middle and end with 100% accuracy.  Students will be able to tell how the fox tricked The Gingerbread man and what was the sad conclusion-- with 100% accuracy.

     Lesson 10 (Math: Patterns-- Review with Hawaiian Tapa) 

Goal #10 Students will enjoy learning about patterns

Objective #10 Students will be able to create an (AB), (AAB), (ABC) and other patterns that they can create by using a Hawaiian tapa cloth design.  They will be able to recognize poi dog, mongoose, and taro field when prompted by pictures with 100 % accuracy.

      Lesson 11 (Math: Ordinal Numbers-- Review with Hawaiian Characters )

Goal #11  Students will have a chance to review some roles in the Hawaiian society and become masters of ordinal numbers from first to thirteenth

Objective #11  Students will be able to respond to a line of people or objects and state which is first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth with 100 % accuracy when prompted by a cue such as he is first, she is ___, etc.   Students will be able to identify a Hawaiian King, surfer, and hula dancer when asked about someone dressed to represent these roles with 100 % accuracy.

     Lesson 12 (Language Arts—The Story of Chinaman’s Hat )

Goal #12 Students will listen to the story and then have a chance to rehearse the information which will help them to learn the information in an unforgettable way.

Objective #12  Students will be able to talk about an ocean current, herbs, rhythm, priceless, carver, and tea with 100% accuracy when prompted with a picture.  Students will be able to give a short summary of the story that will include the beginning, middle and ending with 75% accuracy.

     Lesson 13 (Language Arts—The Story of Chinaman’s Hat-- Part 2)

Goal #13  To help students understand the creative process of writing and illustrating a children’s book

Objective #13  Students will be able to talk about 2 different places in the world where a natural land form is given a name that connotes the way it looks.  Students will be able to identify “Chinaman’s Hat” an island off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii as one of these landforms.  Students will be able to recite a short summary of the story of how Dean Howell came to create his originals Hawaiian legend The Story of Chinaman’s Hat.   Students will be able to match the pictures in the books with that part of the narrative with 100 % accuracy when prompted with a PowerPoint that will show them two pictures and they are read some of the text and identify which picture would match those words from the text.

     Lesson 14 (Language Arts—The Story of Chinaman’s Hat-- Part 3)

Goal #14  Students will use their imaginations to create different ways the story could change in the middle or end.

Objective #14  Students will do some play acting and then tell the class a summary of what they acted out.  They will have to make a decision about what part they want to act out and share with the class.  Students will have to use at least two vocabulary words from our Hawaiian unit in their presentation.  For example:  ukulele, ono, surfer, papaya, coconut, banana, Hawaiian King, Hawaiian queen, Oahu, Maui, The Big Island of Hawaii, tapa cloth, mongoose, musubi, poi dog, aloha, and hula dancer.

     Lesson 15 (Final Unit Evaluation)

Goal #15 Students should remember what they have learned in this unit.

Objective #15  Students will be able to respond with correct answers on a printed test as the teacher reads instructions with 90% accuracy to be found proficient at the unit learning level.
